چکیده
A recently published editorial concluded that severity of disease, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) compliance and comorbidities might explain discrepancies between a randomised sham-controlled crossover study which showed that CPAP reversed metabolic syndrome (metS) and reduced weight, body mass index (BMI) and visceral abdominal fat and our findings from a randomised sham-controlled parallel-group study. Whether CPAP might be a novel method to reverse metS in those with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is an intriguing possibility, since diagnosing and treating metS is important. We omitted to examine the effect of CPAP on metS in our

Cardiometabolic changes after continuous positive airway pressure for obstructive sleep apnoea: a randomised sham-controlled study.
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Impaired insulin sensitivity (ISx), increased visceral abdominal fat (VAF) and liver fat are all central components of the metabolic syndrome and characteristics of men with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The reversibility of these observed changes with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment in men with OSA has not been systematically studied in a randomi...

Obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with increased blood pressure and other features of the metabolic syndrome. The aim of the present study was to determine the relative effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in modifying these outcomes. A randomised placebo-controlled blinded crossover trial comparing cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes after 6 weeks of therapeutic a...
متن کاملCPAP for the metabolic syndrome in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with an increased prevalence of the metabolic syndrome and its components. It is unclear whether treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) would modify these outcomes. METHODS In our double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we randomly assigned patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome to ...
متن کاملObstructive sleep apnoea and metabolic syndrome: put CPAP efficacy in a more realistic perspective.
Non-communicable Diseases, mainly cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, are responsible for two-thirds of the 57 million annual deaths worldwide. Obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are among the key players involved in noncommunicable diseases. Several studies have reported an independent association of OSA with the different components of the metab...
متن کاملComparison of the Therapeutic Effects of Bubble CPAP and Ventilator CPAP on Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Premature Neonates
Background: Respiratory distress syndrome is one of the main complications associated with low birth weight, and a main cause of mortality in premature neonates. The present study aimed to compare the efficacy of ventilator continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bubble CPAP in the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature neonates. Methods: This randomized controlled...
